What Is Hypnosis?

Your mind essentially operates at two levels... the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. Hypnosis is simply a way to speak directly to the subconscious mind.

Your conscious mind has four functions.

  1. It is the analytical part of your mind... In other words, a task oriented problem solver.
  2. It is the rational part of your mind. It tries to attach a reason to why everything happens. (The only problem is that often it does not attach the right reason.)
  3. You draw "Will Power" from your conscious mind. (Will power, however, only provides a short burst of determination. It will not provide a permanent solution.)
  4. It holds your temporary or short-term memory.

Your Powerful Subconscious Mind

Your Subconscious Mind represents who and what you are. It houses the following:

(1) Habits - There are basically 3 types of habits:

a. Good Habits
b. Bad Habits
c. Utility Habits (closing the door behind you, covering your mouth when you sneeze, etc.)

(2) Emotions

(3) Permanent memory

(4.) Perception  (What a person perceives as real is real to that person)

For effective long-term change to take place, it is important to address the Subconscious mind and implement change there.

How Does Hypnosis Work?

Hypnosis works by making positive, ACCEPTABLE suggestions directly to the subconscious mind at a time when the client truly wants those changes to take place. Hypnosis requires 2 things. One, is a caring and competent hypnotist or hypnotherapist. The other, is a client or patient who is ready and willing to make positive change in his or her life. It is a team effort between hypnotherapist and client or patient.

Dispelling Misconceptions

Hypnosis is probably one of the most misunderstood professions in the world. The movie image and the reality are far different.

When hypnotized, you are not asleep in the conventional sense of the word. You hear everything that the hypnotist says. As well, you may hear what ever is  going on around you.

Because the reality is so different than the perception, people sometimes wonder if they were actually hypnotized after a session... that is, until they experience the terrific results of the session.

Another misconception is that you can be made to do things that you would not willingly do. This is pure fiction. Under hypnosis, you cannot be made to do anything that violates your moral, religious or personal convictions. You cannot be made to do anything that you do not, in fact, want to do. If a suggestion is made to your subconscious mind that is unacceptable or violates your value system, your mind will simply disallow the suggestion. It will refuse to accept it.

So rest assured, when under hypnosis, no one can make a person run down the road squawking like a chicken. That could only occur if the person has the desire to act like a chicken in the first place (e.g. a volunteer for a stage hypnotist has agreed, in his or her mind, to be part of the entertainment and will therefore cooperate).

CAN HYPNOTISM HELP YOU?

If you have a true desire to make positive change in your life, the answer is YES. The added advantage is that changes made at the subconscious level are more durable and long lasting than those made on a conscious level.
